Google Home Mini Review: The First Great Echo Dot Rival

If you’re already using a Google Home, buying one or more Google Home Minis is a no-brainer. Once you have a voice-controlled digital assistant in one room, you’ll want them all over the house. At the Home Mini’s announcement, Google said that you could tap and hold on the top of the speaker to activate the listening feature, in lieu of using the “OK Google” or “Hey Google” wake words.

Use it on its own or put one in every room of the house - we guarantee you will find the way it makes your life easier. Also, Google needs to figure out how to better arbitrate devices, so I don't get so many phones and speakers responding every time I ask a question. Commands were executed immediately — when we ordered the Home Mini to start a video, the Chromecast was already loading the video while the Home Mini began to acknowledge our request. It is possible the immediate response is to be credited to the fact that both devices are made by Google, but our hope is the same will be true when we are able to connect various smart home devices. Once we were set up on the device, we were impressed overall with how well the Mini responded to our directives – in English, anyway.

In his spare time, he also tests out the latest drones, electric scooters, and smart home gadgets, such as video doorbells. Before his tenure at Tom's Guide, he was the Reviews Editor for Laptop Magazine, a reporter at Fast Company, the Times of Trenton, and, many eons back, an intern at George magazine. He received his undergraduate degree from Boston College, where he worked on the campus newspaper The Heights, and then attended the Columbia University school of Journalism. Without anything else playing, both the Home Mini and the Echo Dot were able to hear my voice from across the room, even when I talked in a low voice. However, once I started cranking tunes, I had to raise my voice to a near shout to make myself heard by the Mini.

We're seeing more Alexa-enabled speakers than Google-enabled speakers coming down the pike in the next few months, and Alexa has maintained its lead in third-party services. In spite of that fact however, it’s impossible not to recommend this little device. Its Assistant smarts, large list of features and low price make it easy to take the plunge on the Home Mini. Vocals and the like chime through clearly, but come in at the expense of, well, everything else.

Amazon Kindle Scribe review: absolutely adequate

If you want to solely use the Home Mini as a set of Bluetooth speakers, the Google Home app offers up pairing settings, though they are rather buried within the app. The Google Home Mini looks as if Google turned the Home upside down, then smushed it down to size. As such, you’ll find the fabric texture on the top of this device with the matte plastic on the bottom half. Also, if you like to compare tech to food, this device looks like a macaron. The Home Mini is the cheapest way of buying into the Assistant yet for those looking to buy into Google’s smart home ecosystem. While it's a good value for the price, its poor sound performance makes it a better desk buddy than a standalone speaker.

Sure, Google will grant you instant access to your Google Play and YouTube accounts, but you’ll need to help the Mini sign into Spotify and Pandora via the app first. To add smart-home devices, all you need to do is go to a devices list in the app and click on the ones you want to add. Google says the Nest Mini has three spatial microphones that listen to and analyze the surrounding environment for voices.

Set-up

Until a few days ago, you could also tap and hold on the center of the Home Mini to activate the Google Assistant, but something went awry with that feature. I’ve had a Google Home since its early days, and have found it to be more sophisticated than the Echo. It’s better at understanding my requests, and it’s much more helpful when I’m seeking general information. But the Echo series is compatible with more devices, and it’s vastly superior at controlling my smart home system of choice.

google home mini review

On the underside you’ll find a rubberized base that compliments the fabric mesh and hides a microphone mute button on the back side near the power port. Last but not least, on the underside, you’ll find a place for a universal mount for easy hanging on a wall - a first for Google’s speakers. The set-up will help you connect to music services – Spotify and Google Play Music are offered here – and to nearby Chromecast devices , and then you’re just about done. Once the Google Home Mini is happy that it’s learnt your voice and enough about you, it’s ready to get started being your virtual butler. Despite the lack of physical buttons, the Home Mini still has touch controls you can use. To adjust the volume, you tap the sides of the device, or you can long press the sides to play and pause music.

Embedded in the fabric are four multi-colored LED lights that let you know when the Home Mini is listening, processing, or muted. They are not nearly as bright or easy to see from across the room as the Echo Dot’s spinning ring of lights. It does look very cool and presents nicely, but that clearly comes at a cost to the product’s usability and longevity.

Isn’t it annoying when you’ve misplaced your keys somewhere at home while running late to an appointment? Your Google Nest Mini can help you track them down, if you’re using one of Tile’s Bluetooth trackers. In order to track them down, you simply just say, “Hey Google, where are my keys? Google recently brought out the Google Nest Mini, which is incredibly similar to the original compact model but with a few key differences.

Google Home Mini vs Google Nest Mini

I compared the same songs across both devices, and the Dot consistently came up short, without even a hint of a bass. Your milage may vary, of course -- if you listen to a lot of audio through your phone's speaker, the Mini will be an improvement. The Home Mini can stream audio, video or images from Google Photos to any Chromecast-enabled device . Controlling audio and video was one of my favorite features with the original Google Home, and that's still the case here.

google home mini review

The microphones are also making use of a new feature Google calls ultrasound sensing. The speaker emits tiny inaudible chirps, which bounce off objects in the environment, reflect back to the microphones and tell the device if someone is near. This is turned on when music is playing, but you can opt out of it if you like in the Home app. There's also the option to call your home speakers from the Home app if your mobile device has Google Duo installed. Google added several new features and improved sound quality to its second-generation smart speaker. Regardless of which color you go for, the Nest Mini has a fabric mesh on top that covers three touch-capacitive buttons for raising and lowering the volume, and play/pause.

Google Home Mini Review: The First Great Echo Dot Rival

Perhaps Google should have invested in more than two microphones, or some better noise-cancellation software for this device. Setting up Nest Mini takes a but few moments and requires a phone, such as the Google Pixel 6, with the Google Home app installed and a local Wi-Fi network. You’ll have to go through several steps, such as adding the speaker to a room, giving it a name, and registering your voice.

google home mini review

The Echo Dot with Clock will cost $10 more than the Nest Mini and you won't be able to mount it on your wall . However, you will get a practical LED display and the tactile joy of whacking the top of a smart speaker to snooze the alarm. The Google team also redesigned the speaker inside the Nest Mini, making it larger and just a bit heavier with more space around the components to create a fuller bass sound. In 2016, Google showed off its first smart speaker, the Google Home. Small but mighty, this speaker came with all the smarts of Google Home but at an affordable $49.

Fantastic value with all of the features you could want, it’s not to be dismissed. For such a small speaker, it's pretty loud—you can hear it easily from across the room. You mostly won't interact with the Mini itself, but its controls are handy. Tap on either side to turn the volume up or down; tap quickly in the middle to pause or play, or press and hold to get Assistant.

Google Home Mini Review

The Google Nest Mini is the second-generation miniaturized, voice-activated speaker for your home. It replaces the Google Home Mini in Google’s lineup of Assistant-powered hardware. If you want to know whether or not this little speaker lives up to its big aspirations, we’ve got a tune for you. Another new feature will let you use the Home devices as an intercom — you'll be able to "broadcast" a message from the Google Assistant to all other Home devices in the house.

google home mini review

Google knows that the vast majority of smart speaker users rely on them to play music, and competition has become fierce. A handful of audio gear companies have begun to sell their own Google Assistant-powered speakers — most of which trounce Google’s in terms of audio quality. The speaker doesn't have a 3.5mm output jack or a standard Bluetooth connection. You can play music from your phone by using the Google Home app, and can connect the speaker to a larger, Chromecast-enabled speaker for better sound quality.

Google Nest Mini

Two LEDs on the side of the Nest Mini show you where to tap for volume control. If you work from home every day, the Google Nest Mini is a solid coworker. It knows your schedule front-to-back, has answers to most any question you can come up with and sounds especially good in smaller spaces like a home office. Find a song on YouTube you want to listen to on your phone and then connect via Bluetooth to hear that song on the Nest Mini. Sony, B&O, Philips and Polk are on board with selected hardware, however. In terms of services, you can get news and sport updates from the BBC, Sky, Reuters, CNN and more, and you can control YouTube, Netflix and Spotify among others.

That’s great if you’re trying to hear the daily news over the dull roar of kitchen conversation, and awesome for podcast fans who can never find a speaker that properly amplifies voices. When you do the math on how much goes into this speaker - the speakers, the microphones, the wireless receiver and on-board processor - it’s kind of amazing how cheap Google can sell this speaker for. Our comprehensive tests help you buy the very best for your money, with our advice sections giving you step-by-step information on how to get even more from your music and movies. Everything is tested by our dedicated team of in-house reviewers in our custom-built test rooms in London, Reading and Bath.

These Philips Hue string lights will make your Christmas tree sparkle

Google is all about getting its voice-powered Google Assistant into as many places as possible. It’s already on every new Android phone, and is available to the iPhone and myriad other devices via apps and APIs. The original Google Home Mini was a fine assistant, but not the best speaker.

You could use aBluetooth adapter plugged into the auxiliary jack of your other speakers, but I doubt many consumers would go to the trouble. In terms of sound, the Nest Mini delivers a bit more clarity and the Echo Dot a bit more punch. I wouldn't let sound be the deciding factor on these smaller, budget-friendly speakers.

Adjusting “Hey Google” sensitivity

At $49 and with voice match and improved artificial intelligence capabilities, the Google Home Mini is a wonderful assistant that seamlessly puts the Google platform at the tip of your tongue. The hands-free calling feature allows you to make outgoing phone calls to anyone in your contacts list, assuming they live in the United States, Canada, or Mexico. You can also call your dry cleaners or other phone numbers not stored in your contacts list by simply saying, “Hey Google, call the Dry Cleaners on 15th Street” or whomever you want to call. Google has also rolled out interactive experiences geared toward children’s entertainment called “Family Link,” which includes games, storytelling, beatboxing, and more. In addition, there’s Interpreter mode, which is a nifty feature that allows you to communicate with someone from another language. The Google Home Mini’s packaging is a foreshadowing of the device’s simplicity.

google home mini review

The small speaker is surprisingly loud and full sounding for its size, is able to understand voice commands from across the room, and integrates extremely well with other Google-made devices. You won’t want to make any phone calls with the Mini, but nearly every other intended use is expertly executed. Put the Nest Mini and other Google Nest products to use as an intercom. You can issue the broadcast command from any Google Assistant-powered speaker, or use the Google Home app on your phone, to send an alert to the other devices in your home. My favorite use-case is to broadcast in the evenings to let my daughters know it’s dinner time. Google's undeniable advantage comes from the amount of info Google has about both the world and your own activities.

Better sound, but when you put it next to the Echo Dot…

AptX is a codec used for transmitting audio wirelessly with Bluetooth. It is developed by Qualcomm, and supports 16-bit audio at a bit rate of 384kbps. Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard that allows data transfers between devices placed in close proximity, using short-wavelength, ultra-high frequency radio waves. Dolby Atmos is a surround sound technology that allows sounds to be interpreted as three-dimensional objects. If you have a second speaker of the same type, you can pair them together to create a stereo sound setup. Inside Google's anechoic chamber, one of the testing facilities the company uses to gather speaker data.

google home mini review

It is compatible with Google Assistant, allowing you to use voice commands to control the device from other Google Assistant-compatible devices. Inside the Nest Mini is a machine learning chip with up to one TeraOPS of processing power. This chip helps the speaker learn which commands are commonly repeated so it can respond to them without needing the cloud at all. Let's say you turn on your kitchen lights or ask to play a specific song every day of the week at the same time. The Nest Mini learns those actions, stores that data locally and processes those commands without sending any information to Google's servers.

You can, of course, just treat it as a Bluetooth speaker and use it to play songs from your phone, but that wouldn’t be making the most of its potential. Sign up for Lab Report to get the latest reviews and top product advice delivered right to your inbox. And while Google's third-party "actions" are catching up to Alexa's, Alexa is still ahead when it comes to support for third-party services.

google home mini review

In a head-to-head audio test, the Home Mini simply blew the Echo Dot out of the water. Once connected, I said, "Hey, Google, turn on my dining room lights," and they responded instantly. Although the LEDs on the top of the Home Mini light up when they detect your voice, they're hard to see, especially if the Mini is across the room from you.

Google Home Mini review

The Google Home Mini can play music from YouTube and Google Play right out of the box, and from Spotify and Pandora once those services are linked through the Google Home app. Apple Music is not one of them, but you can still play it using a Bluetooth connection. The speaker preserves the details of your favorite tunes with clarity that has to be heard to be appreciated. If you're deep in Google's ecosystem and prefer using its products and services, the Home Mini is a natural choice -- provided you don't rely heavily on a G Suite account. And Google's implementation of voice calling is much better, but the Mini's terrible call quality negates that advantage.

google home mini review

The team at Google spent hours testing the audio transparency of dozens of fabrics to create a more eco-friendly cover for the Nest Mini. The speaker's top fabric is made from 100% recycled plastic, and the external enclosure is made from 35% recycled plastic. Google told me that one half-liter plastic bottle makes enough fabric to cover a little bit more than two speakers.

You’re not going to be able to turn your room into a hopping nightclub, but the Mini is more than capable of filling an average-sized room with pleasing sound. Last, there’s a small notch on the back so you can hang the Mini on a wall if you wish. Since the device has to be plugged in, the wire will need to be draped down the wall. This is not the best look, but there are now third-party accessories that can bundle the charger, cord, and Mini itself into one unit.

For nursing home residents, though, Montessori is more focused on enabling these individuals to keep the independence they still have. Studies show that the approach can result in increased feelings of self-worth, greater levels of engagement, and more communication with staff, family members, and fellow residents. Well, the concept of using the Montessori approach with dementia patients stems from the idea that these patients, like children, need individualized, sensorial experiences in order to thrive. Fortunately, most home care providers do not charge higher hourly rates for persons suffering from Alzheimer’s, vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, or other type of dementia.

Rule #2: Quality of care

There are high chances that a person with dementia will get proper nutrition when they are in a nursing home. When the person with dementia is at a premium nursing home, it also implies that relatives and friends can go back to their normal routines seeing that the ill person is in the right environment. It can be very stressful to leave a person who has late-stage dementia alone at home. On this note, it is important to note that nursing homes have undergone major transitions over the years.

In this section, CMS provides an overview of dementia and behavioral health and defines behavioral intervention, person-appropriate care, and appropriate medication use in residents with dementia. By 1994, J&J found its replacement in Risperdal, and projected plans to sell Risperdal to tens of millions of Americans, generating $1 billion per year. A very small fraction of people suffer from schizophrenia, however, the only condition for which Risperdal was approved. Johnson & Johnson (J&J) makes over 90% of its money from prescription drugs and medical devices, and each drug has its own team of salespeople and elaborate marketing initiatives. Those with early-stage Alzheimer’s or dementia may not need much assistance. However, it might be best to have a skilled caregiver present with them during certain times of the day, to ensure their safety and to help maintain their living conditions. Brain-imaging scans of older adults and persons with dementia reveal dramatically decreased uptake of glucose. Competency of staff to care for cognitively impaired residents is in surveyors’ bull’s-eye. For people who are both financially and medically eligible, Medicaid will pay for all their nursing home costs, which includes care costs and room and board. A diagnosis of dementia does not mean that a person is medically eligible for Medicaid, but a person with dementia who requires nursing home care would be medically eligible. Financial eligibility criteria are very restrictive, very complex and are discussed in detail on this page. In short, the applicant must have less than $2,000 in monthly income and less than $2,000 in assets. Unless married, they must surrender all their monthly income to Medicaid (except for approximately $20 to $100). In return, Medicaid will pay for the complete cost of their nursing home care for as long as they require it.

In fact, study after study has shown that nursing home residents with cognitive impairments who receive recreation therapy demonstrate significantly improved depression levels, increased activity and alertness levels, and lowered fall rates. Yet, in most nursing homes, many residents access activity programs only occasionally, and those programs are not always suited to an individual’s preferences or even functional level. Many dementia patients prefer to stay in their homes with their families and hire in-health care providers. However, they may also opt for memory care facilities like nursing homes, adult daycare programs, adult family homes, and continuing care retirement communities.

While the FDA can control drug companies, it cannot control doctors. It is perfectly legal for doctors to prescribe drugs “off-label,” or in this case, to elderly dementia patients. Drug companies know this, and go to painstaking lengths to market drugs to doctors under-the-radar, so as not to get caught by federal authorities. Residents in nursing homes also have state and federal rights. The level of expertise, as well as experience of the staff in such homes, gives them an upper hand when it comes to choosing the right foods for the residents.

For many, long-term medical treatment in nursing homes is still the best option for their loved ones.

The CMS is partnering with federal and state agencies, nursing homes, other providers, advocacy groups, and caregivers to improve comprehensive dementia care. The Partnership promotes a multidimensional approach that includes public reporting, state-based coalitions, research, training, and revised surveyor guidance. However, the main difference is how dementia care nursing home residents receive a higher level of care. The facility may have memory care units, which means they are cared for by staff members with special training for people with dementia. Does putting someone in a nursing home accelerate their cognitive decline?

Relatives and friends get to enjoy great peace of mind when their loved one is in a good nursing home. It also creates opportunities for spending quality time together when they visit the ill person in the home. Briefly, Medicaid requires persons with dementia to be nearly impoverished to be financially eligible. The rule-of-thumb is that an applicant must have less than $2,000 in monthly income and less than $2,000 in countable assets. However, there are many, many exceptions to these rules and some states offer exceptions for those with dementia specifically.

The nursing home facility you choose should be a place they are comfortable with and where they will feel at home. With these local resources and trusted guidance, you will have better chances to find the right living setup for your loved one with dementia. Before you go out to look for the right nursing home, you must first set up your budget. You will have to consider the expenses related to their medical care and other medical needs that you may need to pay for in the long run. Even if the information isn’t personally relevant at the moment, it’s still validating to know that the pedagogy has far-reaching implications beyond childcare and early education. Through Montessori-inspired activities that facilitate use of these skills, aging adults can maintain functionality longer and extend their independence.

After years of living under the care of your parents and other family members, the time will arrive for you to reciprocate. At Senior Strong, you can show your loved ones just how much you value them. Montessori’s ability to restore joy into the lives of older adults and those suffering from dementia is perhaps one of the most uplifting aspects of this approach to long-term care.
